You Reap What You S.O.
A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux
I fell in love with the grim reaper?!!
Say goodbye to your immortal soul—and your lovesick heart! The moment you laid eyes on that ravishing cloaked figure, you knew you couldn't bear to live—or die—without them. There's only one problem: all this death in the world makes Death so busy! It's hard to find quality time to spend together, but look on the bright side! Violent, disturbing, and deeply tragic deaths happen all the time, so you're sure you'll see them soon! And maybe then you'll have a chance to tell them how you truly feel!
"You Reap What You S.O." is a roughly half-hour visual novel about falling in love with the grim reaper. It was made individually over a two-week period for UC Santa Cruz's ARTG 170 program, as the first project of the quarter (a.k.a. Game Jam 01). The theme of this jam was "reap what you sow".
The game is largely comedic in tone, with a focus on irony and morbid humor (a content warning for certain topics is provided at the start of the game, and there is an option to skip graphic scenes). It is a kinetic novel, meaning it is entirely linear.
If you are interested in visual novels with a greater level of character choice, and that make extensive use of sound design, check out the games I made for my ARTG 120 class.
The game includes background art by Noraneko Games, generously made available for use with attribution. These and other assets not originally created for the game are listed in the game's About page.
